Converting JPG to PNG

JPG is a lossy photo format and PNG is a lossless one, so this conversion rebuilds your picture in a container that never throws pixels away again. When PNG beats JPG, and when it does not

PNG wins whenever an image contains hard edges: screenshots, user interface captures, logos, charts, diagrams and anything with text in it. JPG smears those edges because it compresses in eight by eight pixel blocks, which is why screenshots saved as JPG look grubby around lettering. PNG stores the exact pixel values, so a screenshot stays razor sharp and usually ends up smaller than the JPG version as well. Photographs are the opposite case. A holiday photo has millions of subtly different colours and no flat areas for PNG to compress, so the PNG can easily be four times the size of the JPG while looking identical. The practical rule is to use PNG for anything generated by a computer and JPG for anything captured by a lens, then switch to WebP when the file is going on a website. Remember that converting JPG to PNG does not repair damage that is already baked in. It freezes the current quality so that later edits and re-saves add nothing new.
