How the RAW Converter Works

Two Ways to Get a JPG Out of a RAW File

Every RAW file carries a JPEG the camera rendered at the moment of the shot, with the picture style, white balance and sharpening set on the camera. The embedded preview pulls that JPEG out untouched, in a fraction of a second. The full decode develops the sensor data itself: demosaicing with the AHD algorithm, the camera's white balance or an automatic one, and an exposure shift of up to two stops either way, producing the neutral, slightly flat look RAW developers start from. It takes a few seconds per photo on one thread; half size makes it four times faster and is plenty for the web. LibRaw is the decoder behind most RAW software, compiled to WebAssembly and run in a worker on your machine.
