The Math Behind Reaching a Savings Goal

Every month your balance grows in two ways: the deposit you add and the interest on what is already there. With monthly compounding, the balance after each month is the previous balance times (1 + annual rate / 12) plus the deposit. How is the required monthly deposit calculated?
With the annuity formula: deposit = (goal - current x (1+i)^n) x i / ((1+i)^n - 1), where i is the monthly rate and n the months to the deadline. At 0% interest it simplifies to the gap divided by the months. The calculator handles both cases automatically.
Does the calculator account for inflation?
No. Amounts are nominal. If your goal is 3 or more years away, consider inflating the target: a 10,000 goal with 3% annual inflation is roughly 10,900 in 3 years' money. Enter the inflated figure as your goal to keep purchasing power constant.
What interest rate should I enter?

Why does the last quarter of the goal arrive faster than the first?
