The Math Behind Reaching a Savings Goal
Every month your balance grows in two ways: the deposit you add and the interest on what is already there. With monthly compounding, the balance after each month is the previous balance times (1 + annual rate / 12) plus the deposit. Saving 300 per month toward a 10,000 goal starting from 1,500 takes 28 months at 2.5% interest; at 0% it takes 29. Interest matters little on short horizons and a lot on long ones.
The reverse mode uses the standard annuity formula: required deposit = (goal - current x (1+i)^n) x i / ((1+i)^n - 1), where i is the monthly rate and n the number of months.
