A Faster Way to Grade Quizzes and Tests
This tool works like the classic cardboard grading wheel (the EZ grader) that teachers have used for decades, but without the spinning. Type the quiz size once and the chart below shows the score for every possible number of wrong answers. Grading a stack of 25-question quizzes? One wrong is 96%, three wrong is 88%, five wrong is 80%. You stop doing mental division after the second paper.
The default letter scale is the common US ten-point scale: A at 90% and above, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60%, F below that. Plenty of schools use different cutoffs, for example a seven-point scale where a B starts at 85%, or standards-based systems with no letters at all. The adjustable scale lets you match whatever your school or district uses, and the chart updates instantly.
A tip for awkward quiz sizes: tests with question counts that do not divide 100 evenly (like 7, 13, or 30 questions) produce repeating decimals, which is exactly where manual grading errors creep in. On a 13-question quiz each item is worth 7.69%, so two wrong is 84.6%, which many teachers would round to 85%. Decide on a rounding rule before you start the stack, not halfway through it.
If you also need to average scores across a term or work out what a student needs on the next assessment, pair this with the Final Grade Calculator and GPA Calculator on ToolForte. Everything runs in your browser, no student data is uploaded anywhere.
How the Test Grade Calculator Works
- 01Enter the total number of questions on the test or quiz.
- 02Enter how many answers were wrong.
- 03Read the percentage score and letter grade instantly.
- 04Use the chart below to grade the whole stack: it lists the score and letter for every possible number of wrong answers.
The Digital EZ Grader
The score is simply (questions - wrong) / questions x 100. The value of the tool is the full grading chart: set the quiz size once and read off scores for the entire pile, exactly like the classic cardboard grading wheel. The default letter scale is the ten-point scale (A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60), and you can adjust every cutoff to match a seven-point scale or any district policy. Awkward quiz sizes like 13 or 30 questions produce repeating decimals, so the chart shows one decimal place to keep rounding consistent across the stack.
When to Use This Calculator
Use it whenever you grade a stack of papers by counting wrong answers: quizzes, spelling tests, homework checks, and multiple choice exams. It is faster than mental math from the third paper onward and eliminates the small division errors that creep in with odd question counts. Students can also use it in reverse, to see how many questions they can afford to miss and still reach the grade they want.
Common Use Cases
- Grade a stack of paper quizzes fast by reading scores off the chart instead of dividing per paper. → Grade Curve Calculator
- Show students how many questions they can miss and still hit their target letter grade.
- Check scores for homework and exit tickets with unusual question counts like 7, 13, or 30.
Tips
- Set the quiz size once and keep the chart open while grading the whole stack.
- Adjust the scale first if your school does not use the ten-point scale, or every letter in the chart will be off.
- For partial credit tests, work in points instead of questions: total points as the question count, points lost as wrong.
