Frequently Asked Questions

How is the test score calculated?→

Score = (correct answers / total questions) x 100. On a 25-question quiz with 3 wrong, that is 22/25 x 100 = 88%. The letter grade is then read from the scale, which defaults to A at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, and D at 60%.

Can I change the grading scale?→

Yes. Open the adjustable grading scale and set your own cutoffs for A, B, C, and D. For example, a seven-point scale would use A at 93, B at 85, C at 77, and D at 70. The result and the whole chart update immediately.

How many wrong answers is still an A on a 20-question test?→

With the default scale, an A needs 90%, which is 18 of 20 correct. So 2 wrong (90%) is exactly an A, and 3 wrong (85%) drops to a B. The chart shows this cutoff at a glance for any quiz size.

What about tests where questions have different point values?→

This tool assumes every question is worth the same. For weighted tests, add up the points earned and points possible, then enter points possible as the question count and points lost as the wrong count. The percentage math is identical.

How should I handle rounding, for example 84.6%?→

Decide on one rule before grading the stack and apply it to everyone: round half up (84.6% stays a B on a scale where B starts at 85, unless you round to 85), always round up, or truncate. Consistency matters more than which rule you pick, and the chart's one-decimal display makes any rule easy to apply.
