How the Dutch AOW Age Works

The AOW (Algemene Ouderdomswet) is the Dutch state pension, paid from the month you reach the AOW age. That age is not the same for everyone: it has been rising since 2013 and is tied to average life expectancy, so the year you were born decides when your AOW starts. This calculator uses the official table published by the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) and adds the months to your birth date to give you the exact start date.

The distinction that matters most is between fixed and expected. For everyone born before 1 October 1964 the AOW age is set in law and will not change any more. For anyone born on or after that date the age is an expectation: it is recalculated as life expectancy figures are updated and is only confirmed about five years in advance. Plans that treat a 2045 AOW date as a certainty are building on sand, which is why this tool labels every result rather than presenting one number.

Someone born on 31 January with an AOW age of 67 years and 3 months reaches it on 30 April, not on 1 May. Rounding that wrong shifts the payment by a month, so the calculation clamps to the last valid day of the target month.
