DUO looks at your parents' combined income from 2024 (two calendar years back) for grants in 2026.
Estimated grant per month
€ 324,52 - € 815,60
Between roughly € 41,500 and € 70,000 the aanvullende beurs phases out gradually. DUO calculates the exact amount from your parents' 2024 income and family situation.
This is an indication, not advice. Amounts are the official DUO rates for early 2026 and are indexed during the year; your exact aanvullende beurs depends on your parents' income, siblings who study, and your study history. Check duo.nl or your Mijn DUO account for your personal calculation.
How Studiefinanciering Works in 2026
Dutch student finance from DUO has three main parts. The basisbeurs is a basic grant every full-time mbo (bol), hbo, and university student under the age limits can get: in early 2026 it is € 324.52 per month for students living away from home and € 130.21 for students living with their parents at hbo/wo level, and € 350.03 / € 107.26 at mbo level. The aanvullende beurs is an extra grant of up to € 491.08 per month (hbo/wo) that depends on your parents' income. The studentenreisproduct puts free public transport on your OV-chipkaart, on weekdays or weekends by choice.
The aanvullende beurs is the part most students leave on the table. DUO looks at your parents' combined income from two calendar years back, so for 2026 that is their 2024 income. Below roughly € 41,500 you get the full amount; between there and about € 70,000 it phases out gradually. Around 40 percent of students who are entitled to an aanvullende beurs never apply, so it is always worth requesting: DUO calculates the exact amount for you and € 0 is a possible outcome with no downside.
Both grants are performance-based (prestatiebeurs) for hbo and university: they start as a loan and are converted into a gift once you graduate within ten years. For mbo levels 1 and 2 the basisbeurs is always a gift. On top of the grants you can borrow extra from DUO and take out the collegegeldkrediet for tuition, but loans must always be repaid, with interest, over up to 35 years, so borrow deliberately rather than by default.
A worked example: an hbo student living in a student room whose parents together earn € 38,000 gets € 324.52 basisbeurs plus the full € 491.08 aanvullende beurs, about € 815 per month in gift-convertible grants plus free travel. The same student living at home would get about € 621. Use the Budget Planner on ToolForte to fit rent, groceries, and insurance around that number, and the Salaris Calculator if you want to see what a side job adds net. Figures verified against duo.nl in August 2026.

Basisbeurs, Aanvullende Beurs, and the Travel Product
Studiefinanciering has three parts. The basisbeurs is for every eligible full-time student: in early 2026 it is 324.52 euros per month uitwonend or 130.21 euros thuiswonend at hbo/wo level (350.03 and 107.26 euros at mbo level). The aanvullende beurs adds up to 491.08 euros per month (hbo/wo) depending on parental income: full below roughly 41,500 euros, phasing out to zero around 70,000 euros. The studentenreisproduct gives free public transport on your OV-chipkaart. For hbo/wo both grants become a gift if you graduate within ten years.
When to Use This Calculator
Use it before starting a study to budget your monthly income, when deciding whether moving out (uitwonend) is affordable, or when checking whether applying for the aanvullende beurs is worth it. Roughly 40 percent of entitled students never apply for the aanvullende beurs, so an early estimate can be worth hundreds of euros per month.

Tips
- Always apply for the aanvullende beurs: DUO calculates the exact amount and zero is a harmless outcome.
- The reference income is from two years back; if your parents' income dropped since, ask DUO for a peiljaarverlegging.
- Borrowing extra is easy but repaid over decades with interest; treat the loan part as a deliberate choice.
