AVIF and JPEG XL Converter - Modern Image Formats in Your Browser
Convert PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and JPEG XL images to AVIF, JPEG XL, WebP, JPEG or PNG. The AVIF and JPEG XL encoders are the same ones Squoosh uses, running as WebAssembly on your device. Up to 50 images at a time, downloaded singly or as a ZIP.
AVIF or JPEG XL: Which One to Pick
AVIF is the safe modern choice for the web: every current browser displays it, and at the same visual quality it is usually half the size of a JPEG and noticeably smaller than WebP. Encoding is slow, which is why a large photo takes a few seconds here. JPEG XL compresses even better, keeps 16-bit and HDR data, can losslessly re-wrap an existing JPEG, and decodes quickly, but browser support is limited to Safari at the time of writing, so it suits archives, print workflows and apps that ship their own decoder rather than a public website. WebP remains the compatible middle ground, and JPEG and PNG are there for tools that accept nothing else.
The quality slider is the encoder's own scale: 60 to 75 is visually clean for photos, 40 to 50 still looks fine for thumbnails. Lossless keeps every pixel and is the right setting for screenshots, diagrams and images you will edit again. Everything is decoded and encoded on your device, so a folder of family photos never leaves your computer; the JPEG XL decoder is loaded once as WebAssembly the first time a .jxl file is opened, because browsers other than Safari cannot read the format themselves.
How the AVIF and JPEG XL Converter Works
- 01Add up to 50 images: PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF or JPEG XL.
- 02Pick the output format and a quality, or tick lossless for screenshots and graphics.
- 03Convert. Each image is decoded on your device and encoded with the AVIF or JPEG XL encoder running as WebAssembly, or by the browser itself for WebP, JPEG and PNG.
- 04Download one image, or all of them as a ZIP. The list shows the size before and after.

When to Use This Tool
When a website's images should load faster and the build tooling does not produce AVIF. When a designer sends a .jxl that nothing on your machine opens. When you want to compare how small a photo gets in AVIF versus WebP before choosing a format for a whole site. When a batch of screenshots should become lossless AVIF for an archive.
Frequently Asked Questions
- No. Decoding and encoding happen in your browser. The encoders are downloaded once as WebAssembly files from toolforte.com and run locally.
- Most browsers cannot display JPEG XL yet. The file is correct; open it in Safari, in an image viewer that supports JPEG XL, or convert a copy to WebP to check it.
- AVIF is a video codec's still-image mode and searches hard for the smallest file. Running on one thread in the browser it takes a few seconds per photo. Lower quality does not make it faster; smaller images do.
- No. Images are re-encoded from pixels, so camera metadata and embedded profiles are dropped, and colours are treated as sRGB. Use the Metadata Remover if that is what you wanted anyway, or keep the original for archiving.
