Currency Converter with Live ECB Rates
Convert money between more than 30 world currencies in one click using official reference rates published by the European Central Bank. Enter an amount, pick the currency you have and the currency you need, and the converter instantly shows the result together with the exact exchange rate and the date the rate was published. A swap button reverses the pair, and quick buttons cover popular combinations such as EUR to USD and USD to JPY.
Travelers use it to budget trips and check what a hotel bill really costs, online shoppers use it to compare prices on foreign webshops, and freelancers or small businesses use it to quote clients and reconcile invoices in another currency. Because it runs entirely in your browser, it is also a handy sanity check before accepting the exchange rate your bank or card provider offers.
The rates come from the Frankfurter API, an open service that republishes the daily reference rates of the European Central Bank. The ECB updates these rates once every working day around 16:00 CET, based on a regular concertation procedure between central banks. That makes them ideal for indicative conversions, accounting, and price comparisons, though the rate you get at an exchange office or from your bank will include a margin on top.
The converter covers 31 currencies including the euro, US dollar, British pound, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, and major Asian, Scandinavian, and Latin American currencies. Results are shown with up to four decimal places, and small rates such as JPY per USD are displayed with extra precision. Rates are cached in your browser during the session, so switching between pairs is instant and does not send repeated requests.
Planning finances across borders? Pair this converter with our Inflation Calculator to see how purchasing power changes over time, or use the Salary Calculator Converter to compare wages between countries before accepting a job abroad. For percentage-based fees on currency exchange, the Percentage Calculator quickly shows what a 2 or 3 percent margin costs you on a large transfer, and the Tip Calculator handles restaurant bills once you have converted your travel budget into the local currency. All ToolForte tools are free and private, and run on your own device.
How the Currency Converter Works
- 01Enter the amount you want to convert in the amount field.
- 02Pick the currency you have and the currency you need, or tap a popular pair button.
- 03The converter fetches the latest ECB reference rates and shows the result with the rate date.
- 04Use the swap button to reverse the direction, or check the mini table for other major currencies.
Getting Accurate Currency Conversions
The converter uses the daily reference rates of the European Central Bank, served by the free Frankfurter API. These rates are updated once every working day around 16:00 CET, so on weekends and holidays you see Friday's rate, and the rate date is always displayed under the result. Reference rates are mid-market rates: the midpoint between buy and sell. Your bank, card provider, or exchange office will add a margin on top, typically between 0.5% and 4%, so treat the converted number as the fair-value baseline rather than the exact amount you will pay. For budgeting a trip, convert your total budget once and round generously. For invoicing in a foreign currency, state the rate date on the invoice so both parties agree on the basis. If you are offline the converter tells you clearly instead of showing stale numbers silently, and a retry button appears once your connection returns. Rates fetched during a session are cached, so switching between pairs is instant.
When to Use the Currency Converter
Use it whenever you need a quick, trustworthy exchange figure without opening a banking app: checking a foreign webshop price, budgeting travel money, quoting an international client, sanity-checking the rate your bank offered, or converting salary figures between countries. Because it uses official ECB reference rates with a visible date, it is also suitable as a documented basis for expense reports and bookkeeping entries.
Common Use Cases
- Convert a foreign webshop price to your home currency before checkout.
- Budget holiday spending money with the current EUR to USD rate.
- Quote an international freelance client and document the rate date. → Invoice Generator
- Compare a salary offer abroad against your current pay. → Salary Calculator
- Check how much margin your bank charged on a card payment abroad.
Expert Tips
- The displayed rate is the mid-market rate: expect to pay 0.5-4% more at banks and exchange offices, and factor that into budgets.
- Rates freeze over weekends: a conversion done on Sunday uses Friday's ECB fixing, which matters for volatile currencies.
- For recurring invoices in a foreign currency, agree with your client on using the ECB rate of the invoice date to avoid disputes.
