Where These Ideal Weight Formulas Come From

None of the classic ideal body weight formulas started life as health advice. Hamwi (1964) was a quick bedside rule for estimating a starting point in diabetes care. Devine (1974) was created to dose drugs like gentamicin whose distribution follows lean mass rather than total weight; it is still the standard in clinical pharmacy today. Robinson and Miller (both 1983) are statistical refinements of Devine fitted against Metropolitan Life insurance mortality tables. All four share the same structure: a base weight at 5 feet plus a fixed increment per inch of height above that.

The formulas disagree with each other by design. For a 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) man, Robinson gives 71.1 kg, Miller 70.4 kg, Devine 73.2 kg, and Hamwi 75.2 kg, a spread of nearly 5 kg for the same person. Devine and Hamwi climb fastest with height (2.3 and 2.7 kg per inch), so they diverge most for tall people and produce unrealistically low numbers for very short people. The healthy BMI range is the more useful benchmark for actual health. Reading the Results

Each formula uses a base weight at 5 feet plus a fixed number of kilograms per inch of height above that, which is why they diverge for tall and short people.
