Keeping Quality and Transparency When You Leave AVIF

PNG is the right target whenever the image is not finished yet. Because it stores pixels exactly, you can round trip a PNG through an editor as many times as you like without accumulating artefacts, which is the opposite of what happens with JPEG. That makes it the safe container for logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams and any cut out product shot that still needs retouching. Transparency is the other reason to pick PNG here. AVIF supports an alpha channel and so does PNG, so a cut out subject stays cut out and you never end up with a white rectangle behind it. Watch the file sizes though. A photograph that sits at 200 KB as AVIF can pass a megabyte and a half as PNG, because PNG cannot approximate. That is a fair trade for an editing master and a poor one for a web asset, so treat the PNG as a working file rather than something you publish. One technical caveat is worth repeating: the browser canvas is 8 bit sRGB. If the AVIF was authored in high dynamic range or in a wide gamut such as Display P3, colours are mapped down to standard range in the process.

When to Use AVIF to PNG

Use PNG when the file still has editing ahead of it, when transparency has to survive, or when the receiving system explicitly lists PNG as an accepted format. Design handovers, documentation systems, ticket attachments, presentation software and most asset pipelines all fall into that group. Choose JPG instead when the file is a photograph you only need to look at, share or print, because the PNG version will be several times heavier for no visible benefit. And if the original AVIF is going straight back to a web page, do not convert it at all.

Expert Tips

• ✻Resize before you convert if you already know the target size. A 4000 pixel wide PNG you will never use at that size is wasted disk space.
• ✻For screenshots and flat interface artwork, PNG is genuinely the better format, not just a compatible one. Text stays crisp instead of picking up ringing.
• ✻If a colour looks slightly off compared to the original, the source was probably wide gamut. Re-export from the original design file rather than trying to correct the PNG.
• ✻Keep the AVIF as well. It is the smaller file and stays the right choice for anything that has to load over a network.
