How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

Overtime pay is your base hourly rate multiplied by an overtime premium for every hour beyond the normal schedule. At the common time-and-a-half rate, a 25.00 base rate becomes 37.50 per overtime hour, so 40 regular hours plus 5 overtime hours pays 1,000.00 plus 187.50, a total of 1,187.50. The calculator also shows your effective hourly rate across all hours worked, which is useful when comparing a salaried offer against an hourly job with regular overtime.

The 1.5x multiplier is the legal minimum for hours over 40 per week for non-exempt employees in the United States under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and 2x double time is common for holidays, seventh consecutive workdays, or hours beyond 12 in a day in some jurisdictions such as California. Many European countries instead regulate overtime through collective agreements: multipliers of 1.25x for the first bracket and 1.5x beyond are typical in Dutch and German agreements, and some contracts compensate with time off rather than money.

Because rules differ that much, the multiplier field is fully editable and there is a separate line for double-time hours, so you can model a week that mixes normal overtime and holiday work. Salaried employees can still use the tool: divide your gross annual salary by 52 weeks and your contract hours to get an equivalent hourly rate, then check what the extra hours you are actually working would be worth if they were paid.
