How Weekly Timesheet Hours Are Calculated

Each day the calculator takes the span between your start and end time, subtracts the break minutes, and converts the result to decimal hours. A 09:00 to 17:30 day with a 30 minute break is 8.5 hours minus 0.5 hours, so 8.00 hours. Overnight shifts are handled automatically: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift crossed midnight, so 22:00 to 06:00 with a 45 minute break counts as 7.25 hours.

Decimal hours matter because payroll systems multiply hours by an hourly rate, and 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 in decimal, not 7.45. Mixing up the two formats is one of the most common timesheet errors. The overtime threshold defaults to 40 hours per week, the standard in the United States under the FLSA, but it is fully adjustable because many countries and contracts differ: full-time in much of Europe is 36 to 40 hours, and some collective agreements set overtime after 38. Split your costs honestly: fixed costs stay the same whether you sell 10 units or 1,000 (rent, insurance, salaries), while variable costs scale with each unit (materials, payment fees, shipping). Break-even units = fixed costs / (price per unit - variable cost per unit). With 5,000 fixed costs, a 25 price, and 10 variable cost, that is 5,000 / 15 = 334 units (rounded up), or 8,333 in revenue. The denominator is called the contribution margin.
What is a contribution margin ratio?→
The margin as a share of price: (price - variable cost) / price. A 25 price with 10 variable cost gives 60%. It converts directly to break-even revenue: fixed costs divided by the ratio. Software businesses often run 80%+; retail commonly sits between 20 and 50%.
