A GIF can hold at most 256 colours drawn from a palette, a limit set in 1987 and never lifted since. PNG stores 16.7 million colours and 256 levels of transparency per pixel. Converting a GIF to PNG gives you a file that will never band again, that supports soft anti aliased edges, and that every modern editor, chat app and document format accepts. For flat graphics the PNG often ends up smaller than the GIF as well.

Animation does not survive the trip. PNG in its standard form holds a single still image, so an animated GIF is converted using its first frame only and the rest of the timeline is discarded. Turning a GIF Into a Clean Still Image

What happens to an animated GIF?โ†’
Only the first frame becomes a PNG. Every later frame is discarded, because a standard PNG holds exactly one still image. If you need all frames, use a dedicated frame extractor, and if you need the animation itself, keep the GIF or export a short video.
Will converting add back the colours the GIF lost?โ†’
No. The 256 colour palette limit was applied when the GIF was created, and that information is gone. PNG lifts the ceiling for anything you do next, but it cannot reconstruct a gradient that was already flattened into visible bands.
Why does my logo still have a white outline?โ†’
GIF transparency is one bit, so a pixel is fully opaque or fully clear with nothing in between. The half transparent pixels along a curved edge were rounded to opaque when the GIF was made, leaving a fringe. The PNG preserves what is there; removing the fringe is a manual edit.
Is the PNG bigger or smaller than the GIF?โ†’
For a single frame of flat artwork the PNG is usually smaller, because its filtering plus Deflate compression beats the LZW compression GIF uses. Against a whole animated GIF the comparison does not mean much, since you are keeping one frame out of many.
