Converting BMP to JPG

BMP stores an image in the simplest possible way: one row of raw pixels after another, with no compression at all. A 1920 by 1080 image in 24 bit BMP is always about 5.9 MB, whether it shows a detailed photograph or a plain white rectangle. JPEG compresses that same picture with a discrete cosine transform and typically lands under 400 KB at quality 90. That gap is the entire reason this conversion exists.

BMP files turn up in surprisingly modern places. Microsoft Paint saved to it by default for years, Windows puts bitmap data on the clipboard, and a great deal of scanning software, industrial camera software, till systems, identity capture booths and laboratory equipment still writes BMP because the format is trivial to produce. If you have inherited a folder of them from a colleague or a machine, this is the tool that makes them portable.

The format dates back to Windows 2.0 in 1987 and carries a few quirks with it. Rows are padded out to four byte boundaries and are usually stored bottom to top, which is why some tools display BMP files upside down. There is a run length compression mode in the specification, but almost nobody writes it. Your browser reads all the common variants, decodes them to pixels and re encodes them as JPEG on your own device.

The practical win is storage and delivery. A hundred captures at 5.9 MB each is 590 MB, which will not fit inside a mail attachment, a ticketing system or a shared drive quota without complaint. The same hundred as JPEG files is closer to 40 MB. Keep the quality slider at 90 for photographs. Screen captures full of small text are the one case where JPEG struggles, because the compression smears the edges of letters.

Some 32 bit BMP files carry an alpha channel and JPEG has no way to store transparency, so pick a background colour before converting and any see through pixels take on that colour. Dealing With a Folder Full of Bitmaps

The reason BMP files are so large is that they store nothing but raw pixel data. There is no compression doing any work, so the size follows purely from the dimensions and the colour depth. Width times height times three bytes gets you very close for a 24 bit file, which is why every 1920 by 1080 bitmap weighs roughly the same regardless of what it shows. JPEG changes that completely by transforming blocks of pixels into frequency coefficients and discarding the ones the eye barely registers, which is how a six megabyte bitmap turns into a few hundred kilobytes. Match the quality setting to the content. Photographs, scanned pages with images and camera captures all hold up well at 90. Line drawings, engineering diagrams and screen captures with small text are the weak spot, because JPEG smears sharp edges and text starts to look fuzzy at any setting. For those, PNG is the better target. If the bitmaps came from a machine that produces them continuously, such as a scanner or a camera station, convert in batches of twenty and keep the settings the same throughout so the archive stays consistent.

When to Use BMP to JPG

Convert whenever storage, transfer or compatibility is the constraint. Bitmaps clog shared drives, blow past attachment limits and are awkward to open on phones and tablets. JPEG solves all three and is accepted essentially everywhere. Hold off in two situations. If the bitmap is a diagram, a schematic or a screen capture full of small text, use PNG so the edges stay sharp. And if the file is a master that will be edited repeatedly, keep a lossless copy alongside the JPEG, because each save cycle removes a little more detail.

Expert Tips

Resize first if the bitmap is much bigger than the size it will actually be shown at. Halving the width cuts the pixel count to a quarter before compression even starts.
Do not run the same image through a JPEG encoder twice at a low setting. Convert once from the bitmap and keep that result.
For anything containing small text, compare a JPEG at 90 against a PNG side by side before committing the whole batch.
A 32 bit BMP with transparency needs a background colour chosen deliberately. Leaving it on white is fine for print and wrong for a dark interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a blank white BMP still several megabytes?→

Because BMP stores each pixel individually with no compression at all. A blank image costs exactly as much as a detailed photograph of the same dimensions. JPEG, by contrast, compresses a flat area down to almost nothing.

How much smaller will the JPG be?→

For a typical 24 bit bitmap at quality 90, expect somewhere between ten and twenty times smaller. A 5.9 MB full HD bitmap usually lands between 300 and 600 KB depending on how much detail it contains.

My BMP looks upside down in some programs. Will the JPG?→

No. BMP normally stores rows from the bottom up, and a few older tools read that incorrectly. Your browser handles the row order properly, so the JPG comes out the right way round regardless.

Should I convert scanned text documents this way?→

Only at high quality, and preferably not at all. JPEG compression softens the edges of letters, which hurts readability and makes text recognition less accurate. PNG keeps scanned text crisp and is the safer choice for anything you may need to read back.
