Build Better Habits with Visual Tracking

Research shows that tracking habits visually increases the likelihood of maintaining them. This habit tracker uses a grid-based approach inspired by the "don't break the chain" method popularized by Jerry Seinfeld.

All data is stored in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server. Your habits and completion data are private and persist across browser sessions.

How the Habit Tracker Works

  1. Add habits by typing a name and pressing Enter or clicking Add
  2. Click the checkbox for each habit on the days you complete it
  3. Switch between week and month views to see different time ranges
  4. Track your streaks and completion percentages in the summary section

Building Better Habits with Visual Tracking

Research in behavioral psychology shows that visual progress tracking significantly increases habit adherence. This tracker uses the 'don't break the chain' method: seeing a growing streak of consecutive days motivates you to maintain the habit. The color-coded grid provides instant feedback on your consistency patterns.

When to Use the Habit Tracker

Use this tracker for any behavior you want to make consistent: exercise, reading, meditation, coding practice, journaling, or health habits. The visual grid format works best for daily habits where streak maintenance is motivating.

Common Use Cases

  • Personal health: track exercise, water intake, meditation, and sleep habits
  • Learning: maintain daily reading, language practice, or coding streaks
  • Productivity: track work habits like deep focus blocks, inbox zero, and planning
  • Wellness: monitor screen time limits, journaling, and gratitude practice

Expert Tips

  • Start with just 2-3 habits to avoid overwhelm, then add more once those are consistent
  • Check your habits at the same time each day to make tracking itself a habit
  • Use the month view weekly to spot patterns in which days you tend to miss

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my habit data stored?
All data is stored in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server. Your data persists across browser sessions but is specific to the browser and device you use. Clearing browser data will remove your habit history.
How are streaks calculated?
A streak counts consecutive days (including today) where a habit is marked as completed. If you miss a day, the streak resets to zero. The counter checks up to 365 days back to calculate the current streak length.
Can I track habits for past dates?
Yes. The grid shows the past 7 or 30 days, and you can click any checkbox to mark a habit as completed for that date. This is useful for catching up on tracking or correcting missed entries.
Is there a limit on how many habits I can track?
There is no hard limit. However, research suggests tracking 3 to 5 habits at a time is most effective. Too many habits can reduce focus and make the grid harder to scan. Colors are automatically assigned from a palette of 8 distinct colors.
